Marrakech –> Merzouga –> Fez

INTRODUCTION:

This 4-Day Berber Culture Trip from Marrakech to Fez via the Merzouga Desert will allow you to experience some of the culture of the Berber Nomads and the Moroccan culture at large. Experience wonderful sceneries, historical Kasbahs, visit the Dades Gorge and Toudra Gorge and a camel trek and overnight stay in the Sahara Desert.

What to Expect:

DAY 1: Marrakech –> N’Tichka Pass –> Ait Ben Haddou –> Dades Valley

Pick-up at Hotel or Riad in Marrakech and start travelling to the Dades Valley via the Tizi N’Tichka Pass and over the High Atlas Mountains. Enjoy the amazing landscapes and fascinating views of the Berber villages. In Ouarzazat, visit the Kasbah Taourirt, one of the most beautiful Kasbahs on the area. Have lunch by the Kasbah and continue journey through the road of “the Thousand Kasbahs”, with numerous photo opportunities of nature and people. Stop at Skoura in the birds valley to see the 18th century Kasbah of Ameridhil. Visit Kalaat Mgouna, famous for roses and its annual Festival during the roses harvest in May. Continue through Dades Valley and enjoy seeing majestic sand castles and the amazing rock formations known as “monkey toes”. Overnight accommodation and Dinner at your Hotel.

DAY 2: Dades Valley –> Todgha Gorge –> Rissani –> Merzouga

Have breakfast at your Riad or Hotel. Travel to towards Tinrghir and the Todgha valley. In Todgha Valley, enjoy panoramic views of the old mud Berber villages. At Todgha Gorge, walk under the 300m high red cliff, popular with many rock-climbers. See the panoramic views of the old mud Berber villages overlooking the valley. Enjoy a 2 hours hike within the valley (optional) ; meet locals in their fields and learn about the local culture and geography. After lunch, your journey continues to Merzouga via Erfoud through Tafilalet, the largest date palm grove in Morocco. Walk the souk in Rissani, viewing vegetable, dates, crafts and animals and learn about the trading caravans. Drive to the village of Merzouga and check in to your Riad. Overnight accommodation and Dinner at your hotel or Riad Half-board (HB).

DAY 3: Merzouga Desert and Camel Trek

Have breakfast at your Hotel or Riad. Visit the nomads in their goat hair tent and learn about the desert life. Visit the Gnawa (Gnaoua) people, originally slaves brought from West Africa and experience their music and lifestyles. See the lake of Merzouga with its bird populations. Time permitting, visit the nomad warehouse where many Berber handicrafts are sold. Depending on the time of year, visit lake of Merzouga and its bird population. Guided camel ride to explore the sand sea of Merzouga and enjoy the sunset before dinner in the camp. Enjoy the beauty of the Sahara Desert and the sunset over the sand dunes. Dinner in front of the camp, where you will spend your first night under canvas or the stars, your preference. Overnight and dinner at desert camp. Half-Board (HB).

DAY 4: Merzouga –> Ziz Valley –> Azrou –> Fez

Early in the morning, wake up to watch the most beautiful sunrise in the Sahara Desert, enjoy a delicious traditional Moroccan breakfast at your desert camp. Enjoy Camel trek back to the village of Merzouga over the spectacular Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Drive to Fez, enjoying the fascinating landscape along the Ziz Gorges carved from volcanic rocks, and through the Tizi n’ Talghamt Pass to Midelt. After lunch in the town of Midelt, continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains and the Cedar Forest where you will see Barbarian apes in the wild and huge cedar wood forest. Continue to Fez, where the tour ends at your accommodation.
